ABSTRACT

Objective: to compare the perinatal outcomes among the normal and abnormal CTG groups during labour at term.
Study Design: cohort Study
Place and Duration of the study: department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Unit 1, Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi from 7th April 2013 to 6th September 2013.
Methodology: the data was collected from patients admitted through Gynaecology and Obstetric OPD and emergency of Holy Family Hospital for 06 months from 7th April 2013 to 6th September 2013. Initial evaluation was done by taking complete history, doing complete general physical, abdominal examination and pelvic examinations. Routine investigations (Blood complete picture, urine analysis, blood grouping, random blood sugar, hepatitis profile) were carried out. Patients were divided into two groups according to CTG, those with normal CTG and those with abnormal CTG. All labouring patients were monitored closely during labour by vital signs, uterine contractions and foetal cardiac activity.
Results: Total 150 patients were enrolled in the study according to the inclusion criteria of the study and were divided into two groups according to Cardiotocography (normal CTG and abnormal CTG). Mean gestational age (weeks) in both the groups was 38.08+0.912 and 38.51+1.256. Difference in APGAR score at 1 min and 5 mins , mode of delivery and admission in NICU  was statistically significant  (p-value 0.000).
Conclusion: There was significant difference between perinatal outcome in normal and abnormal CTG groups. CTG can be considered as a good screening test of foetal surveillance but it is not the sole criteria to influence the management of high-risk pregnancies. Abnormal CTG should be supplemented with other test before intervention.
